Reasons Why Most Home Businesses Fail
There are many reasons why a new home business might fail, but below we will look at some of the most common reasons and what you could do to get around them. It is not generally due to just one of these reasons, more the joint affect that these points have on whether you are successful or not.
Lack of £$€
Most people start home businesses in order to supplement their normal income from jobs, or because they want to leave their job altogether. With today’s economy being what it is, you may also find the redundant and jobless having a go at making money online too.
Generally because of their situation, people often rush into their online business because they need money. Ironically, this often means they will fail. If you have very little money to play with while starting a new business, you will need to plan plan plan, don’t rush it, research a lot, and budget for what you will need. If you have got £1000 sitting in your bank account with no chance of getting anymore until you earn some more, you don’t want to fritter it away.
The first thing you will want to do is to budget for your living expenses, cut away EVERYTHING that is not necessary – your weekly DVD shopping spree, new clothes unless absolutely necessary, don’t drink alcohol when you go out, don’t go out too often – anything that you would describe as a luxury. So all you should have on your list is rent/mortgage, food, car bills (if you have one), toiletries and clothing.
The next thing you will need to do is put together your business plan; how are you going to go about putting this business together? Do you need to buy in stock? Are you able to build a website? If not can you afford to pay someone to do it? What about advertising? How do you intend to get word out to people? How exactly are you going to earn money?
You may need to spend a few days putting this together, researching what you need to put in your business plan. Please don’t just ignore this because as the old saying goes “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail” and it really is true. So to give your self the best chance of success, plan Plan PLAN!!
Additional Note: In order to up the amount of available funds, try selling things you don’t need any more on Amazon or eBay. Spend this Sunday having a major clear out and pile up everything that you could sell. Over the next few days spend an hour each day listing a some of these items – you will be shocked how much money you can earn doing this. But don’t get excited yet – all this money needs to go towards your business!
Bad Marketing
There are two things that can make you to fall over here; one is, as mentioned above, lack of money; and the other is lack of knowledge. The first one will be purely down to how well you have budgeted – I can’t really help you with that one, just prioritise it in your spending.
Knowledge is very easy and cheap to come by. Get your self down to your local library and spend some time reading books. Make notes on what you read and when you get home type them up into a document that you can consult later on in the process.
Please please please do not go online and buy these “Internet Marketing Packages For Newbies” they are designed to extract your money and leave you thinking you have learnt something when in fact you don’t even know where to begin! Admittedly, there are a FEW good packages out there, but most are just designed to make the creator some money. Trust your instincts on this, no package will give you all the answers, and there are NO SECRETS when it comes to internet marketing – they are all out in the public domain if you know where to look!
So make sure you build your knowledge and know what you are doing when it comes to marketing your product or business before you invest a penny into it!
Not Understanding Your Target Market
This is sort of covered in the last two points, but I thought I would mention it separately. Make sure you know your target market. Who are they? Dog enthusiasts? Computer geeks? Make sure you know who your audience is and where they hang out. Make sure you are offering a product that people WANT, just because they might need something, doesn’t mean they are going to go and buy it, they need to want it. Preferably they will need and want it!
Spend some time on the internet, check out forums; see where and when these people are online.
Focusing on the detail
Because you are often on your own doing all the work, you have to think about running the business on a day to day basis, fulfilling orders, replying to emails, dealing with the website and advertising. If you are not able to delegate any of these tasks to a partner, family, friends or employees, you will need to spend a little bit of time each week looking at the bigger picture. Once a week put a few hours aside to step back from your business and see where you are. Are you getting any more hits than last week? Did a particular advertising campaign work? What is your conversion of readers to buyers?
Subjectively evaluate your business as an outsider. Pretend it is somebody else’s business and you are a consultant brought in to evaluate it. Be honest – what would you suggest to somebody who is having trouble with repeat visitors, for example?
I hope you can see with this article that you will need time, patience and plenty of knowledge in your subject area and a certain amount of business knowledge in order to succeed.
